Gemma is a knowledgeable sports and voluntary sector governance specialist with more than 15 years’ experience.  Prior to founding her own governance consultancy business, Love Governance Ltd, in 2017, Gemma was Governance Manager for UK Sport for six years, where she managed a portfolio of twelve Olympic and Paralympic sports’ national governing bodies and funded partners, to ensure they have the highest levels of transparency, accountability and financial integrity. In this role, she contributed to the development of the new Code for Sports Governance to which all funded organisations must adhere (launched in October 2016).  She carried out in-depth assessments of the sports against the Code and worked with them to move towards full compliance with its requirements by the sector-wide deadline of 31 October 2017.

Prior to joining UK Sport, Gemma worked in a range of governance roles, including eight years with the Charity Commission for England and Wales advising trustees and their legal advisers on best practice in governance and compliance with charity law as a case manager, and ultimately as Deputy Head of Governance, helping to lead the Commission’s own secretariat function. She has also held the role of secretary to the Council of the Electoral Reform Society and has been a trustee of a small international charity.

She has worked on various governance-focused consultancy projects, including a governance review for ActionAid UK which included researching best practice governance structures, policies and practices and recommending a new model. This was unanimously accepted by the board.

Gemma is currently taking a break from Getting on Board to be with her new daughter.
